Sinekcim: raise your own fruit fly
Sinekcim is a free fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) life simulation game that runs in the web browser. Your fly makes its own decisions: it forages, escapes predators, climbs trees, flies, courts females and fights rivals. It learns odours and places, and when it dies what it learned passes, slightly mutated, to its offspring. The interface is in Turkish; no installation or account is needed.
Where does the brain come from?
The published version builds its network from the MaleCNS v1.0 male fruit fly central nervous system connectome (Janelia FlyEM / HHMI, University of Cambridge, MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology and Google Research; CC BY 4.0). It keeps the 165,733 traced neurons and connections with at least 10 synapses; sensory inputs and motor outputs are attached to real cell types (for example the looming escape path LPLC2/LC4 → DNp01 giant fibre).
Honest note: for now the fly's decisions come mostly from its drives (hunger, energy, danger, mating) and what it has learned; the connectome carries them to the motor neurons. In our measurements it changes about 1.5% of decisions. The model is not a copy of a real fly and is not endorsed by the data owners.
What the fly learns
- Odour learning in a mushroom body model (reward and punishment, short- and long-term memory).
- Navigation with a central complex model: an internal compass, path integration, local search and remembered places.
- Flight: escape take-offs from ground predators and travel flights; dragonflies hunt flying flies by day.
- Generations: offspring candidates are tested in a short rehearsal and the best one lives on.
- Experiments: predict, then test a copy of your fly in odour conditioning, local search and plume tracking assays; a weekly shared challenge.
